Dr. Erik Baker Shares Expertise on Airplane Safety with Chicago Media

Published: October 26, 2026.

Dr. Erik Baker, director of and former U.S. Navy safety director, remains a trusted source for Chicago media seeking expert insight on aviation safety issues. Most recently, NBC 5 Chicago interviewed Baker after a series of blown-tire incidents at O’Hare International Airport prompted an investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

During the NBC 5 report, Baker helped viewers understand possible causes of tire failures, explaining how a brake issue could stop a wheel from rotating and potentially lead to a blowout. More importantly, he reassured travelers that modern aircraft are designed with multiple layers of safety and redundancy, making such incidents highly manageable for flight crews.

Baker also recently shared similar expertise with ABC 7 Chicago, helping the public better understand aviation safety and put isolated incidents in proper perspective. In both interviews, he translated complex technical concepts into clear, accessible information, helping eliminate irrational fears about air travel while reinforcing confidence in the aviation industry's rigorous safety practices.

His media appearances highlight the important role Lewis faculty play in informing public conversations on critical issues.
